Bard Of Avon

“I count myself in nothing else so happy

As in a soul rememb’ring my good friends”

— Richard II

Founded in 1964, the Bard of Avon Chapter holds the distinct honor of being the founding chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire in Kansas. Our name pays tribute to William Shakespeare, the legendary "Bard of Avon," as our chapter was officially established on April 23rd—Shakespeare’s birthday. This connection to one of Britain’s most enduring cultural icons reflects our appreciation for heritage, history, and tradition.

In 2024, we proudly celebrated our 60th anniversary, marking six decades of sisterhood, service, and cultural connection. Though we are a small chapter, our members represent a wonderful blend of ages, backgrounds, and experiences, all brought together by a shared commitment to fellowship and philanthropy.

We meet on the third Wednesday morning of each month, typically at public libraries in Johnson County or members’ homes. In addition to our regular meetings, we also enjoy several social gatherings each year, including group outings and luncheons that strengthen our bonds and bring joy to our membership.

Our chapter is actively involved at the state, district, and national levels of the DBE, with members participating in events and many serving in state-level leadership roles. We take pride in being engaged and informed contributors to the wider DBE community.

Fundraising is an important part of what we do. We look forward each year to the British Faire and Tea, where we host a booth and enjoy sharing a taste of British culture with the community. Proceeds from our events support Cantata/The British Home as well as local charities, particularly those focused on women’s services and animal welfare—causes close to our hearts.

If you're looking for a welcoming group of women who value heritage, friendship, and making a difference, the Bard of Avon Chapter is always happy to welcome new faces.
